Meeting Scott from the Goo Goo Dolls

A couple of weeks ago, I was at Dublin’s to see Day Ja Voo.  I went to get  a couple of drinks for the band and started a conversation with the guys sitting there at the bar.  Wanting a ‘man on the street’ perspective, I asked them what they thought about the band. Scott and his friend said they were really enjoying the music, and then Scott went on to talk about how he loved 80’s music. We both graduated from college the same year (he went to UB, I went to SUNY Oswego) and we discussed our favorite music from that era.   Eventually Mike returned with my beers and I delivered them to the stage.

Later on, always up for some shenanigans, I explained to Chick all about the blond guy at the bar who looked like Barry Gibb and asked if she would go over with me and take a picture of the two of us.  We went over to Scott and started talking with him.  Chick took a few shots (with her camera), and a few more (he wasn’t happy with how any of them were turning out), then I took a couple of Chick with Scott.  He was a good sport about the whole thing.

Then he asked if we had heard of the Goo Goo Dolls, and I said yes, I was familiar with their work on the City of Angels soundtrack, the song Iris. Out of his wallet came a laminated picture the size of a baseball card.  He showed us the card, with a picture of the band (see the original band picture above), with him smack in the middle, wearing an arm cast.  He knew all about what they performed, told us he was the drummer, and even had a convincing story about why he was wearing the cast.  He looked more like Bobby Sherman than an 80’s rocker, but why would he make it all up?

Chick went over to the band and told them we had met Scott from the Goo Goo Dolls.  I took a different route and scrambled over to a friend, asking him to google the Goo Goo Dolls.  After several searches and some fact checking, it didn’t appear to be true after all.  We did wonder if he tried to get over on two savvy women of a certain age, how many impressionable younger girls he had gotten with this line?  We looked for him later, but he was gone, his cover blown.  Maybe he’ll be back there next time Day Ja Voo is playing, and maybe he will sit in on the drums!!
