I spent much of the day today rockin’ it out to Bruce and his new album, Chapter and Verse, released Friday. It’s a companion CD for his book due out today, Born To Run. The songs on it were fun and span his life in music, but some of my favorites weren’t included, so I thought I would put a few of my own out there for you all to enjoy. Today is my birthday (those of you on facebook have already been informed several times!) and it is so cool that at 9:27 a.m. on 9/27 I am blogging, doing something I really love. #lovemylife
Tenth Avenue Freeze Out (1975)
This song is my very first Springsteen song, introduced to me by my college roommate Joanie. We even had a dance, which we are sure to resurrect when I visit her next winter in Key West.
The River (1981)
One of the things I love the most about Bruce is his storytelling. I found out about this song from its inclusion in a post 9/11 movie with Adam Sandler called Reign Over Me. This story is the story of so many young working class people in the 60’s and 70’s.
Rosalita (1979)
One of my fave dance songs! What a great beat and so full of energy!
Jungleland (1975)
I heard this song for the first time last summer, when I saw a local Springsteen tribute band called the Jungle Land Band. What a powerful song! I will be writing a post later this week about the amazing show Jungle Land Band did just last week at The Palace Theater.
Born To Run (1975)
No Springsteen list is complete without this song, so even though it is on the album Chapter and Verse, I am also including it here.
Glory Days (1985)
This song brings me back to the mid-80’s when I was in college in upstate NY (SUNY Oswego) and had two quadmates from New Jersey, Tony and Anthony. They loved all things New Jersey, and I think one of them actually was a cousin of Bruce, which explains why they had permission to use this song in a movie they made, called Glory Days. It was shot on campus using student actors and crew, and I remember going to the premiere. It was really well done and I wish there was a copy out there in the cyber world so I could see it again. This song gets blasted in my car whenever it shows up on my classic radio station!
Make sure to go out and pick up a copy of the book Born To Run and the companion CD, Chapter and Verse. I happen to know we sell it at Barnes & Noble!
