So many songs came to mind after my blog post Glory Days was published a few weeks ago that I just had to do a part 2. The only group missing is the parody band Tone Deaf from SUNY Oswego. These guys made anything an instrument and the goal was to be bad on purpose. They deserve a whole post all their own. In the meantime, enjoy some of these classics!! And share some of your favorites!!
Play That Funky Music White Boy by Wild Cherry
One day Jenny’s roommate came home all excited about the new song she found out about while shopping downtown. None of us had the heart to tell her it had come out almost 10 years before. Maybe we should have. That may have kept her from torturing us with it over…and over…and over…and over again. 30 years later, whenever Mobius Jones plays this song, I see her face.
Shining Star by The Manhattans
The Manhattans visited the Hewitt Union and I was there. Although I was not familiar with a lot of their work, who could resist their choreography?
Only One by James Taylor
I have been a fan of James Taylor ever since the 70’s when I first heard You’ve Got A Friend, so I jumped at the chance to see him on my birthday weekend at Laker Hall. This was my favorite of all the songs on the newly released “That’s Why I’m Here, although I have a soft spot in my heart for Mona, a song he wrote about his pet pig.
Time Warp from Rocky Horror Picture Show
So sure that I was the only Rocky Horror virgin on the whole campus, I saw the movie for the first time with Joanie when I was 21. I had no idea what was happening as people pulled out toilet paper and water pistols. And what was up with the toast?? Just yesterday a guy a work jumped to the left, and then I just had to quote the song. Colby is my resident pop culture expert, so he knew exactly what I was talking about!
Our House by Crosby, Stills, and Nash
I will admit it, I attended a Greek rush event at SUNY Oswego with Patty, Ellen, and Joanie, whose roommate Kelly belonged to a sorority (I think it had Delta in it.) All I remember about that night is that Patty or Ellen ate the stuffed mushrooms meant for the sisters and that they all stood in a circle holding hands singing this song. None of us ever joined a sorority but we did make one up, called Iota Mu Nu, and when I went to the bathroom the three of them voted on officers, and I came back to the room and was designated the pledge. This led to weekly ‘hazing’ that usually consisted of them trying to get me into the guys bathroom to give me a swirly.
Din Daa Daa by George Kranz
Mike and Tom’s room was so much fun to visit, and there was always music and beer. For some reason, this song was a favorite. You may recognize it from the Kmart commercials that ran this past summer! Admit it, it’s really fun!
Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie
Possibly THE anthem of every college student pulling an all-nighter in an effort to get a paper or project done after procrastinating for two weeks, which is the story of my undergrad college career. Always looking for that one more chance, the possibility that next time I would start earlier and be more thorough and produce the perfect presentation.
Footloose by Kenny Loggins from the soundtrack Footloose
See Debbie and Walter at the dance marathon. Hear Footloose play. See Debbie and Walter talking so much they miss the song. That was the entire marathon! What do you expect when Miss Personality and Mr Student Vice President partner up? We stayed up the whole night and did end up doing a lot of dancing, Kevin Bacon is classic. If you like this video, be sure to check out his Footloose performance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon!
